Schools Kill Creativity – My Favorite TEDtalk

I have watched this TEDtalk by Sir Ken Robinson numerous times and without a doubt can say it is my absolute favorite. He makes a riveting point: schools kill creativity. I have a huge interest in higher education, mainly because I feel there is so much room and need for improvement. There was undoubtedly an inverse relationship between my creativity and my business degree.

If you watch only one video I recommend, make it this one:

If it weren’t for my boss Ken Nelson (the director at the media studio I worked in part-time at MSU) my creativity would have most definitely been squandered away the business college. He was always pushing me to brainstorm crazy, think out loud during brainstorming sessions and kept my creative juices flowing. I really hope other students find a Ken in their school or job.

And to answer your question Sir Robinson….

If a man speaks his mind in the forest and no woman can hear it, is he still wrong?

Yes. He is.

April Fools, Google & the Art of Procrastination

in honor of SCM & Tobias

I always get a lot of quality non-school related work done whenever I have an exam or paper coming up.

So, naturally while [procrastinating from] studying for my MGT 409 exam tonight at the good ‘ole biz lib, Steph, Mike and I began researching google’s previous April fools jokes and pondering what it will be this year…

Our dysfunctional study group in five lines or less:

steph: sitting at her comp, having her frog voiced mac read sing an email from her mother out loud.

g: google, google, google, google ….I hope that’s my child’s first word.

mike: I think your meds have worn off.

….I think so too. I need to go to bed.

BUT before I go, thought I’d share some of my favorite google April Fools jokes:

So, entertain me this April Fools day 2010…what’s your favorite April fools day prank – not just from google from anyone/anywhere?

g – what’s this all about?

Not quite sure exactly what my posts will be about, but my passions are:

  • learning (life-long learning) new things
  • entrepreneurship (especially social entrepreneurship)
  • charities, volunteer work, & non-profits
  • supply chain management - I’m a senior at MSU graduating with a BA in supply chain management from the Eli Broad College of Business.
  • international business/globalization/different cultures
  • social media (especially twitter! - @gmkatopodis)
  • efficiency. any way to making life more efficient

I finally decided to blog on my own blog…

So I’ve been working on blogs, twitter & facebook as a main part of my part-time jobs. I’ve been to nervous/unsure about starting my own blog for lots of reasons…I wasn’t sure what  I would talk about, not sure who would read it, didn’t think I would have enough to say, etc.

But as much as I like/try to plan things out, I’m one to go with gut feelings & my gut’s telling me: g, it’s time to blog.

So here it goes…

HOW TO: Study Effectively During Finals

Effective Studying

Find a good study area

Having a good study area can make a huge difference to how well you learn. Your study area should be: well lit, quiet, as away from noises & people as you can get. Depending on where you live & who you live with it might be better to study at the library. If you know you get distracted around a lot of people, reserve a room at one of the libraries. Finally, make sure your desk/table is clean & organized – it will help you concentrate on studying & learning, not trying to find information.

To do lists

Make a to do list before each study session. Breaking tasks down into small, manageable tasks will make it less overwhelming. And we all love the feeling of crossing off things we’ve completed, it will keep your motivation up. You can manage your tasks rememberthemilk.com & sync it with gmail, iPhone, droid, etc.

Find out about the exam

Find out what format the exam will take i.e. Are the questions in essay, short answer or multiple choice format? Is the exam open book or closed book? All professors go over this, but if you missed that class e-mail an acquaintance & ask. (But please, don’t email the entire class through the Angel system, it’s extremely annoying & a sidenote…profs can read message sent to the class through Angel. Think a little.)

Study groups

Forming a studying group can be a helpful way to revise your notes and work through past exam questions (it can also help you feel supported, keep you motivated and focused). If you have questions about your work, a study group may be a good place to have them answered. Ask your teacher if they know of anyone else interested in studying with other people. Again, you can reserve a room for your study group.

Switch the phone (& fbook notifications) off!

If you find that you are being distracted by your phone going off, it might help to put put it on silent (not vibrate)  or just turn it off. Vmail was invented for a reason. & turning off your facebook notifications for a few days (or if you’re on gmail filter them to a skip the inbox & archive so you can go back & look at once finals are over). Everyone knows it’s finals time, your friends will understand. – this is super hard, especially for those of us addicted to our Crackberry (including me) or iPhone, but it will truly help.

Wallpaper your pad

Write down key concepts you have to learn on post-its maybe with examples. Post these up all around your apt/dorm/house. Eg – by your bed, on the bathroom mirror, along the side of your tv, on your Wii…wherever! It helps with remembering things like equations, quotes and foreign languages.

Take regular breaks

Getting up, moving around & away from your desk at least every 50 minutes for 10 minutes makes you concentrate and learn better. If you use gmail, there’s a lab for that: E-mail Addict.

MOST IMPORTANTLY…GET SOME SLEEP

No, seriously. U.S. researchers have directly linked higher grades with getting adequate sleep. (study) You will do better on your exams if you adequate sleep the night before. Lack of sleep impairs motor skills, causes higher stress levels, depression, anxiety.

I learned this from an article in Ing Magazine: Sleepless in East Lansing. “If you are stumbling around when tired, your body is in the same state of mind as if you had had one to many drinks. Conclusion from the article: using an all-nighter to remedy educationally unproductive periods, such as parties, Facebook, or “study group” meetings at the bar, greatly hinders your body’s performance the next day.” So Spartans, get some sleep.

OK, what is the deal with Twitter?

Who would even follow me? I don’t need to update everyone on my every move! Sound familiar? I hear it all the time.  But here’s the thing – you don’t have to look at twitter as a way to give out your personal information (unless you want to), instead think of it as a way of getting information from others.  One thing is for sure, Twitter is blowing up…at a rate of 1,382% to be exact (as of March).  It doesn’t seam to be going anywhere anytime soon.  So it’s time to stop wondering, and start utilizing twitter for everything it can do for you.  And yes – there’s lots it can do.

Don’t know where to start? Well you’re in luck – mashable (a great resource for online social media) has just released a Twitter Guide Book for those who are new to Twitter.

The best part about Twitter? The external sites that people have developed to utilize the information flowing through tweets…even for your jobs search: www.TwitterJobSearch.com a job search engine for twitter.

There are tons of twitter’s you can follow that strictly post job postings. How to find them?  Once you make your twitter account click “find people” search “[city] jobs” [replace city with the city of your choice] and see what job twitterers are out there.  For example, want to live in Chicago? I just searched Chicago jobs & these are just the first 5 that came up: chicagowebjobs, jobschicagojobchicago, Chicagocareers, GreenJobChicago all posting job openings.  Think about it – instead of you searching everywhere for jobs, all you have to click is “follow” and a constant flow of job postings will come to you!

Leave it up to our generation to come up with the most lazy way possible to have information come directly to us! But hey, who’s complaining?

& for those of you who still want to hate on twitter…enjoy….
